Hubby loves Hamburger Helper. Yanno that packaged mix that all you do is add hamburger. Yep, powdered cheese and a slew of other ingredients I can’t pronounce. I admit, I used to buy it for him when I went out of town for work because I knew he would actually cook and eat it. It must stem from his life before me because trust me, while I like quick and easy meals, Hamburger Helper was never on my menu plan.
I happened upon this Easy Homemade Hamburger Helper recipe while surfing my favorite blogs one day and wondered if I could sway Hubby into this much healthier version. So was it a keeper?
The Ingredients were basically everything I always have in the pantry, well, except the hamburger. HA. I buy the lean 90/10 version, a little more expensive but a whole lot healthier. And I used fresh spinach since I always have it on hand for smoothies. I admit, I was prepared to tell hubby it was parsley if he asked. Ooops.
Chopping the veggies took the longest amount of time but if I had prepped and frozen my veggies ahead of time like I sometimes do, it would have been a breeze. And then from there on out, it was a dump in the pot and cook.
Oh what wonderful colors and aroma!
And just like that boxed mix, it’s a one pot meal, my favorite kinda dish! Once the hamburger was browned, I added the milk, broth, sauce, and macaroni and in a quick 15 minutes, it was done.
Cheese makes everything better in my book and I loved that this was a cheesy dish!
Served with a tossed salad and it was a quick and easy dinner.
Hubby: This is really, really good as he continued to the kitchen for a second helping.
Me: Quick, easy, and yes, I thought it was delicious! And so much healthier!
Thank you, Ashley from The Recipe Rebel for helping me steer Hubby away from that
nasty, I mean, prepackaged Hamburger Mix.
